CHONGQING (CQNEWS) -- On November 23, a special new media art exhibition opened its doors at the Sichuan Fine Arts Institute’s Art Museum, captivating audiences with its ever-changing visuals on multiple screens. One of the highlights is an electronic flower that blooms in real-time and is nurtured by the audience’s interaction. Visitors entering the exhibition felt as though they had stepped into a “space of the future”.
Organized under the guidance of the Chongqing Municipal Culture and Tourism Development Commission, the Hong Kong and Macao Affairs Office of the Chongqing Municipal People’s Government, and the Chongqing Federation of Literary and Art Circles, the exhibition is hosted by Sichuan Fine Arts Institute and supported by various cultural bodies including the Chongqing Artists Association and the Cultural Affairs Bureau of the Macao Special Administrative Region Government, and the Leisure and Cultural Services Department of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Government.
With new media art as its core medium, the exhibition is divided into three thematic sections: “Changes of Light and Enchantment of Code”, “Digital Intelligence Evolution and Technological Disenchantment”, and “Algorithmic Pull and Return of Charm”. These sections provide distinct artistic and academic perspectives on the intersection of art and technology, featuring 26 works from 26 artist groups.
These young artists from the Greater Bay Area and Sichuan-Chongqing regions explore and experiment with new media technologies, using their works to present unique perspectives on the present and future. According to Li Fang, Vice Director of the Art Museum of Sichuan Fine Arts Institute and curator of the exhibition, “This is not only a spark of art but a burst of wisdom and creativity from young artists. It also represents a focused, in-depth dialogue between art and technology, exploring new models of art education, cultural exchange, and technological practice in the new era.”
The exhibition’s works delve into the development and application of technology in art. As Li Fang explains, "In the creative process, how can artists maintain their artistic integrity while embracing technological innovation? This is a key question we are exploring." The works on display reveal how traditional Chinese culture is combined with cutting-edge technology and continues to evolve in innovative ways.
One of the standout works in the exhibition is E-Community by artist Zhang Kailin. A projection device casts an electronic installation onto a pure white wall, showing a series of interconnected homes, each telling its own story. As the viewer zooms in on one home, the narrative unfolds. Zhang, who currently teaches at Sichuan Fine Arts Institute, says, "I’m bringing this exploration of narrative and technology into my classroom as well."
Interactive installations like this offer visitors the opportunity to engage directly with the art, creating a more immersive experience. "Audience members can put on VR glasses and step into the artist’s imagined world, experiencing firsthand how art can be transformed by rapid technological development," Li Fang adds. "Through exhibitions like this, we hope to play a guiding role in public aesthetics and digital literacy, encouraging a deeper understanding of the relationship between art and technology."
